David Bowie, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)

My favourite songs are Five Years and Lady Stardust – but man, what a way to start, the first three songs: Five Years, Soul Love and Moonage Daydream. All good, all good! In fact Moonage Daydream was the thing that really caught my ear the first time around with this album. My mate had the CD and we sat and listened to it in his room, just listened, took it in, buzzed out. Big time. And then the album gets to Starman – the hit that we knew! It almost seemed like a relief, those first three songs were so good and so much that finally we could relax. And then just about my favourite David Bowie song ever – well, sometimes anyway, is Rock’n’Roll Suicide. It was his most productive period – well, pretty much, maybe the Berlin years came close. And it was some of his best music. And I love this record. A lot. And I don’t feel the need to play it all that often these days, because I carry it with me in my head and (a lot of it) in my heart. But I do still listen to it from time to time. And it’s a good time. Every time. We played Ziggy Stardust in a covers-band I was in. Did we fuck it up? Most likely. But we had a good time. Every time. [Full album here]
