The Style Council, Our Favourite Shop (1985)
I really do think Paul Weller is pretty fuckall in the scheme of things. I quite like The Jam but it’s all a bit classless-Kinks and Small Faces without the sophistication. Weller is nothing that special as a songwriter. Not anymore. And his albums that roll out now every couple of years – well they’re just all a bit shit. Not terrible (although some of them are) but just not necessary. I’ve found though, the best way to wind up the Weller fanatics is to proclaim a love for The Style Council. To suggest, in fact, that it was Weller’s best work. It helps, in my case, that I fervently believe it.
