The Cars, Heartbeat City (1984)

I got a lot of mileage out of The Cars (excuse the awful, obvious pun) simply by working that Greatest Hits album. Then when buying cheap records I noticed a lot of copies of Cars albums, this one, the self-titled debut and Shake It Up in particular. Candy-O too I suppose. I still think that Greatest Hits album – the first best-of, not the reissue from the early 00s – is one of the best greatest hits by anyone; an all-time Best best-ofs list candidate, surely. Plenty of good songs here because The Cars were a hit machine by the time of this album – but plenty of great album tracks too…I have no story attached to this record. I think it was bought as part of a giant haul of around 100 records, $1 each; a store just going out of business. And me just jump-starting a collection. But the reality is that the story could simply be that I just love The Cars. That is what it’s about really.
