V/A, All That Jazz [OST] (1979)

I worked in a video store once – and by video store I mean pre-DVD (though, in truth, DVDs were just coming in – it was funny, we stocked about eight of them; serious). The big perk of course was to take home movies and as well as the preview tapes of new and upcoming releases I revelled in revisiting old favourites, obscure concert films and working through “the list” of classic movies. At some point I watched this – I’d always been, if anything, frightened of musicals (drama/theatre/music students at school were generally giant jerks) but I think this film cured me of that. I remember disliking Roy Scheider in this film, by which I mean I disliked his character. I guess that means I wouldn’t really like Bob Fosse – though I’ve always liked his films. I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to this soundtrack LP but I’ve owned it a long time. And it’s calling me. My son Oscar keeps selecting it from a shelf of about 300 LPs. I can hide it in a different place within the shelf – and have done across the last week or two – and every day he finds it, selects it, leaves it on the floor…suggesting I play it. Maybe I will.
