V/A, Can You Dig It? The Music And Politics of Black Action Films 1968-75, Volume One (2009)
I wouldn’t be without this double LP (and I’m not, obviously). Bought it a couple of years back – it covers some great stuff – big names (James Brown) and perhaps lesser known people (Willie Hutch); or at least not the obvious big names. Not today anyway. Here you’ll hear a lot of music that’s been sampled in hip-hop tunes, that’s been used on movie soundtracks beyond the original Blaxploitation context. And you’ll hear (simply) some stunning tunes. I’ve used this during DJ sets – great toilet-break/grab-a-drink material – and I’ve played it as background dinner/drinks music at home. Most often I sit down with it, catch up with it, let it speak to me. I enjoy just having this around. It plays well. It plays nice. It sounds right. Every time. Come to think of it I really should get Volume Two.
