George FM Yearbook 2012: Mixed by Dan Aux

Various/Mixed by Dan Aux

George FM Yearbook 2012

Frequency

Mixed by Dan Aux the 2012 George FM Yearbook is a timely reminder of why I do not listen to George FM. I am not remotely interested in what the station serves up. Good on them for doing what they’re doing I guess – and there are clearly fans that will want to check this out. But me and George seem to have very little in common. For a start, I like music…

Here you will find traces of music, occasionally (it should actually come with the audio equivalent of a health warning) and there is the answer to the question whatever happened to MC Tali. She’s here. Again. I remember a decade or so ago she was being touted as some fresh voice, an original Kiwi MC for the dance/breaks scene. She released a horrific album. And promptly disappeared. Thankfully. Well she’s back – and we have to assume, given her “Bonus Beats” here where she gives a painful plug to George FM that she’s screwing someone at the station. My guess, from what I can hear, is that it’s the audience.

“…she’s back – and we have to assume, given her “Bonus Beats” here where
she gives a painful plug to George FM that she’s screwing someone at the
station.” That’s a total dick move Sweetman. You’d never write this about a male MC. Be ashamed.

    • Mike

“My guess, from what I can hear, is that it’s the audience.” Learn to read, Caron et al.

      • Casey

still makes no sense… lame attempt at a play on words…

      • Em

He still wouldn’t make a comment like that towards a Male MC…Totally inappropriate. I can understand not liking a particular artist, everyone has a right to their taste in music. However it is crossing the line when you make it into a personal attack and insinuate the artist is where she is due to sleeping around. The simple fact is, he wouldn’t make a comment like that if he was talking about a male artist. Disgusting!

  • dave jepson

Simon sweetman!!! Who the fuck are you anyway? Obviously you have a personal reason to hate george fm….
    #twhaaaaaaaat

    • Nubzub

Sweetman, you need to go to journalism class, never mind human being class, to learn how to not be such a sexist prick in print.

  • John

Tali has been in the UK where she has repeatidly won Female MC awards you dork!

  • DJ Subjective

i think you are talking bout tali’s husband who plays on Basefm when you say shes screwing someone on radio. anyway, ive never heard of you till your name gets bashed all over facebook for being a sexist douchebag, and from what i read here, you suck balls bigtime,as a ‘journalist’ and as a human being. but then again, isnt that what journalism is all about, trying to steal a bit of everyone elses fame by bashing their name to stir up crap, well enjoy your few moments of infamy. Tali has been killng it as one of the most,if THE most in demand female MCs in Drum&Bass in the UK & Europe, playing with the best of the best & taking Aotearoa styles to the world for over 10 years, now shes back & keen to push the scene here. Maybe you shuld educate yourself before showing yourself as an illiterate pensmith, & try to contribute rather than dribble poo as you do.

  • Oliver

Sounds like another “Artist who can’t paint” kind of crap review. Jog on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ur.lazy.d Darrin Drugan

    do your research dip shit

  • Michael

Thank the stars we finally have a journo not afraid to speak his mind.

Everyones all butt-hurt and offended over a review. Get over yourselves and get real. This is the problem with NZ, we’re waaay too precious about shit.

Her new tune with Trei is below average; the video made me cringe. I couldn’t watch it all. I’m a huge Trei fan as well.

Until we accept that everyone has an opinion and stop taking ourselves so seriously, we may actually make some proper progress in this wallowing cesspit we call the “NZ Music Industry”.

    Keep it up Simon.

    • Casey

Michael this has nothing to do with Tali’s music and everything to do with such a disgusting and non journalist comment about her personal life. I don’t think people are being precious as such, but are incredibly surprised that this guy is considered a ‘music critic’ who then makes unfounded and hugely offensive comments.
As people are rightly stating – it is one thing to hate on the music, George FM and so forth, but to attack someone when you obviously have no real knowledge of her personality, or work within the music industry itself – is going to cause a back lash.
And may I point out, it wasn’t Tali who came up with the video for her collaboration with Trei – it was him and State of Mind – all she did was feature in it. And good on her.

      • Michael

Go watch the clip with Trei and tell me if you think Tali is an awesome singer.

Go on, I’ll wait right here for you.

        • Casey

Hey Michael – I think the Trei tune is pretty good, but to be fair I’m not overly fussed on Drum and Bass. I prefer her solo stuff, her new album is an awesome example of her songwriting and singing, and I love her live. Stuff like this is more me :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeY3NouGe4Y

          • Michael

i’m not wasting my bandwidth on that clip. Do you know how expensive internet is these days?

          • Casey

lol dude you are actually funnier than Sweetman. You should have his job!

    • kumfarce

      micheal early no doubt.

      • tbc

        both fat dumb rangas

  • luice

wow, you state that you like music and in the same write up you abuse one of the most decorated female dnb mc of all time? and truly talented band leader, but i guess you gota stir controversy for people to read your crap, your write up is as terrible as that look on your face , you poor overwait sad sack,

    • Mike

That’s some excellent spelling there, champ.

  • hotguy69

whose cock are you sucking then to keep getting published? you and your reviews are trash

  • Janine

It’s one thing to write a review of an album if you don’t like the music, and you say as much. That’s fine. But to personally attack an artist, and state that they must be “screwing” someone at a radio station where they are employed? That crosses a line.

What part of that statement is music journalism?
What part of that statement has anything to do with Tali making music?

What part of that statement is anything but misogynistic?

    All. New. Low.

  • Damien

Way to research your material before going to print with your so called content. You are everything that is wrong with western culture.

  • sus one

    and your talent is?????????

  • JC

Wow. I’ve always thought of you as a curmudgeonly old uncle. Irritating but irrelevant. Now I just think you’re a cunt!

  • Emma

You can think what you like about her music, but to say “…George FM that she’s screwing someone at the station” is incedibly misogynistic and sexist. Fuck you, Sweetman. You can’t even use real critique of an artist, instead you resort to attacking the fact she is a woman. You are disgusting and you need to sit the fuck down and figure out where you went wrong in your life.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=727436920 Ani Møller

Firstly, why would you review an album from a radio station that you don’t like? Aren’t reviews to help fans of that genre find more music they would want to buy? I can’t see any other reason to write a review, so if that’s the case, then the words you wrote are completely and utterly worthless for start.

Secondly, THIS: “where she gives a painful plug to George FM that she’s screwing someone at the station”. That is one of the most misogynistic comments I’ve read in a while. What century are you living in? Why do you think it is okay to write that about a female musician? Would you write that about Dan Aux for being the one chosen to mix the CD? Of course not. Because that’s fucking ridiculous.

  • Mo Iller

You, sir, are a complete and utter waste of this planet’s oxygen supply. Tali is not just one of the most well-respected female MC’s, she is one of the most well-respected MC’s PERIOD. To make the claim that she’s “screwing someone at the station” makes it very clear that you are a bush-league hack. In closing, you are to writing as my asshole is to my toilet.

  • Dubs

She was picked up by Roni Size and went to the UK where she became critically acclaimed. And she works on George – what a cock don’t review shit that you don’t know about. “You like Music”, well it clearly does not like you. This blog is arse.

  • Shay

You’ve got no fucking idea you dick. Guess you feel like a “big man” after attacking Tali. She has more talent than you will EVER have. Sitting behind your computer writing shitty articles about shit you dont even know. You’re a fucking loser.

  • Swanky

Go back to the 20th century you old grumpy fuck, your outdated view of the world would do better 50 years ago.

  • josh

this guy oviouslsy watches home and away, choice tv tv one and the shopping channels. Don’t get me wrong they’re great channels but together the make a douschebag like this guy.

    • frixle

hey hey hey, lets not speak so ill of home & away here guys

  • Silke

Have you ever seen Tali live? She is really REALLY good. If only I had a tiny bit of her talent…

  • chopchop

The tasteless note about Tali was unnecessary. Pull your fist out you tosser.

If you ever produce any degree of music, lets hope some minor league blogger comments on your pie eating skills in relation to it’s success…

  • Chris

I hope to god this was a sad play for page views and not a legitimate attempt at criticism of this album.

  • Casey

“You can’t deny that I’ve written a couple things on the blog that have been really harsh and I’d be stupid to say that ‘oh it wasn’t that harsh’. But that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t valid. I really feel that they were valid things to say and part of the reason for saying them was to get other people to respond.”… a quote from Sweetman himself.. I think in this case with his ‘valid’ comment on Tali is definitely just that.. trolling disguised as journalism.

  • Oz

Tali is simply amazing live. I have seen her MC in front of Camo and Krooked and Dirtyphonics; two of the biggest drum and bass acts in the world and she was amazing with both. Simply staggered by the article. Review a genre of music/station you are knowledgeable in, interested in and can appreciate. This may lead to a fair review rather than writing this mindless crap.

To me this article reads like this, “I have absolutely no interest in this genre of music so I am going to give it a negative review regardless of its merit”.

Everyone has a right to an opinion but this is scum ‘journalism’.

  • nope

he might be getting too personal but in ways he’s right, her voice is pretty average and her lyrics are too

    • Casey

So why not just say that?
Right there you have written a better review than he ever could.
Besides – its supposed to be a review for The George FM Year book – Tali features for about 30 seconds! Why not comment on Dan Aux’s mixing, or the tune from our other Kiwi music ladies of George FM – Mayavanya? … its just straight up ignorance… if he bothered to check out what Tali has actually been up to lately he’d seen she has a new album out that she released herself (and is far from average) a show on George FM, has been performing all over the world the last ten years not to mention up and down the country the last year, and she’s a very positive, hard working woman. Its just lame.

      • Michael

Stop jerking off over Tali’s facebook page Casey. Pull ya head in mate.

        here’s a tissue.

        • Casey

Um, Im a FEMALE Michael. Check my latest post. Her singing is not terrible. It may not be your cup of tea (who is may I ask?) but she is hardly terrible. Haters gonna hate! :)

          • nope

your precious thin skinned self really needs to get off your mates tits, it’s embarrassing to see.

  • your mate

still a fat ranga i see SS !

  • your m8

you deleted my comment you fat orange prick

  • sweetmanssweatygingerballs

Jesus! I never comment on blogs…they are usually jumped up pricks spouting their own opinion! But this is beyond the realms of anything remotely journalistic! Sure everyone has their own opinion of what music is good…but shame on you for personally attacking an artist! 10 years ago Tali left NZ and its tall poppy syndrome behind; If you had done any research at all you would realise how much of an asshole you are! Your’e probably at home having a wee giggle about how mad you’ve made people….troll.

  • Randy Ice

Lets just say this….. Sweetman nailed it. Yes she has success over
seas, yes she can play live…. but people in the UK, in certain ‘
Circles ‘ know why she really came back to NZ. It is a poor album ( her
latest ) with crippled production. It has just enough strength to make a
group of Korean School girls giggle.

    • Michael

cannot agree more. Her singing is terrible. Her appearance in Trei’s video is like some cringey regurgitation of a really bad wannabe karaoke song.

    • Casey

‘But people in the UK know why she came back to the NZ’…. really? facts to back up this statement Randy? She’s said she came home because her British husband wanted to move home and she realised she missed NZ.. As for ‘crippled production’ on her latest album? It was produced by a cinematic film scorer who has worked with people such as Tim Burton.. yeah he must really suck to be employed for people like that..

  • http://www.facebook.com/timspaceman Tim Whitehouse

I was lucky enough to work with Tali for the last year she was in the UK – I saw her smashing the biggest stages at Glastonbury in the same week as turning up to small local pubs to perform with our (at the time) unknown band. She’s music through and through, you just don’t get the genre and were never going to write a fair review. Way harsh to pick on Tali for doing something you don’t like so well. It’s like trashing an Italian restaurant because you don’t like pasta!
Give the acoustic version of her album a go – you might find something to like: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8926427818C420C0

  • Det

    What an absolute twat.

  • Sam Swan

Hi, at first I was like whaaaaaaaaaaat the shit?! But then I realised that adding soy sauce to my barbequing corn really does make it extra awesome!

Check out new TREi single with Tali, just dropped on youtube, out on Dec 10, all killer

Dan Aux is an amazing DJ! I listen to GeorgeFM most of the time! What would you know about music?! Get a bloody life and stop criticising good DJ’s!

  • Michael

Yes she is back. And the quicker the album comes out and flops, the better off we’ll all be.

Half-decent MC, but couldn’t sing to save a drowning kitten.

  • Steven

I agree DAN AUX is RUBBISH

    • Michael

he’s like the fat zach galifinakis of dj’ing.

except he’s not funny. Zachs not funny either. always playing some weird semi-gay dude in movies.

    Dan Aux is Rubbish

Perhaps you should re evaluate your integrity as a “journalist” if all you’ve got to write about is your hatred for George FM, which, might I add seems to be built on a foundation of lies and hear say anyway.
Great work bro, journalist of the year award coming your way!!

  • Davey

Cock, shit write up. What the fuck have u ever done? Stop bitching behind your computer screen u gimp

  • Fena

you are an ignorant stupid man and if one day you come to Bristol please make sure to let me know where you are!!!!

  • Ivy

He’s right about MC Tali. She’s awful! And this is from a female too btw.

Stupid comments about MC Tali aside, how you can say an album featuring tracks by Concord Dawn, Shapeshifter, Deadmau5 and Sola Rosa contains only “traces of music” is beyond me. Utterly shit review.

  • Doc

Just watched the Talia video posted by Casey (below)
    Awesome!!

  • Chris Ware

Did you wife sleep with someone to get her book published? See how it works. Not nice right?
