Dear Gwyn – my little Sky Full of Stars,
I think the new album is going to be great. I really do. It’s probably all been worth it – I think we’re about to be taken seriously again. I really do. For a start, it’s the closest in length and feel to our debut, which is back before I even knew you. Funny now, to think of the journey, right? Anyway, in accordance with how you want it – being cordial at all times, sensitive to your partner’s needs, letting go of blame, sharing any own ambivalence, being clear about what you and I both want, deciding on mutual priorities, being focussed on the topics at hand, you know; that sort of thing – I wanted to ask one favour…just one…
You see the album starts with Always In My Head – and you always will be – I’m right back to the yearning; the trademark. Think of the colour of your hair – it was all…YELLOW! People are already saying it lines up with Parachutes, or Rush of Blood… and that’s great darling, that’ll be great for you and me, well, er, for me. And you. Separately. And for Apple. And Moses too.
Magic is the next song – it’s another one that, I think, goes back to Parachutes. It talks of a longing, a need, it’s all heartbreak babe. And hey, sorry if this is tough to take, I’m really, really sorry, but it’s all gonna be worth it. Will, you know “Drummer Will”, he reckons the cover of the new record is like a cross between Smashing Pumpkins and Ginger Baker. And Jonny said “that’s perfect really – because that’s exactly the two audiences we’re hoping to capture” – you know to bring in alongside all our ex-Radiohead fans (before they “got weird”) and our “still U2 fans, obviously!” So that’s great.
For the song Ink, babe, we’ve taken a feeling from one of Eric Clapton’s best songs. Yes! I’m talking about In My Father’s Eyes – and I sing about getting tattoos and carrying them, and about how “I’m lost/whenever/you’re gone” and how “all I know/is that I love you so/So much it hurts…”Guy says it’s one of my best lyrics! I told him he’s always been one of my best bass players. I bloody meant it!” And I reckon he did too.
If this is a bit hard to take, then I’ll understand, but True Love is the next song, it’s – well, I guess I just have to say it, it’s ‘classic Coldplay’. I’m talking Rush of Blood, but also the best stuff from X&Y too but Midnight (is where the day begins – haha – JOKE!) is probably my favourite. It’s even, dare I say it, a bit Phil Collins! There’s a mood on this one, I swear, I mean I was aiming for Peter Gabriel, truth be told, but you know – aim for Gabriel/settle for Phil – and the guys really pushed themselves on this one. I know they did. Because it’s basically just me – so they were pushing themselves around the studio in wheelchairs for the most part, playing silly buggers. Will’s idea. Obviously!
Another’s Arms – and I’m sorry Gwyn, I really am, is probably my absolute favourite track from the new album. It’s like the best of our pre-Military Wear/Neon Street Kit music – seriously what were we thinking with all that fluoro?!? Was I mental!? Don’t answer that!
Oceans has hints of the very earliest Coldplay, we’d never have put something like that on Parachutes. But I guess we can do whatever now, right? Anyway, I really like it – and I reckon the fans are gonna love it on the tour. Just me. Acoustic guitar. I’ll be singing my fuckin’ heart out love. Promise.
And then there’s A Sky Full of Stars – which is you! It’s You. It really is you. It’s for you. And it is you. It’s everything we’ve ever tried to be. And it’s a whole lot more than what we ever managed on Viva and Mylo – I mean this is really it. This is me just shouting it out. Big dance-music feel to this. Bloody epic!
The final song is called O – as in that’s all that’s left to say, really. “O” And again I think it’s one of our best – it’s early Coldplay. But it’s the Coldplay of right now!
Anyway, I wouldn’t normally ask – but the record company is worried this might all appear a bit “so what”, a bit spice-less, a bit “bland”. They were wondering and, er, I was wondering…you know you said that thing, you said you were gonna, maybe, make an announcement, like proclaim that our split was gonna be, I dunno, a “cognisant parting” or whatever the words were – let’s face it, you were ALWAYS better with words than me! – anyway, it would really help Will and Guy and Jonny and Me – the band luv! The bloody band! – if you’d make that announcement on your website before we release. We’re all set to go. So if you could see it in your heart, if you could see it so that the lights will guide you and ignite your bones, I’d love it – we’d all blimmun be so over the ruddy moon if you could make that announcement, in your way darl’, in your way, but if you could do that soon…like really, really soon? Like – later this week? That’d be just great.
May god put a smile upon your face.
