Tomahawk: Oddfellows
Tomahawk Oddfellows Ipecac It’s the fourth album from Tomahawk and it is the least interesting. You see Tomahawk records – the other three – are interesting. The first two, particularly, were brilliant, pulverising and polarising but this one is a case of too little, too late, arriving after a giant break – Mike Patton’s increasing [...]Archive

The Vinyl Countdown # 1412
Ryan Adams, Demolition (2002) It’s amazing what time will do – I had this album, vinyl, sealed, from the time it was released. And at that time I a) didn’t have a turntable and b) figured I might start a time-capsule type-thing. The idea was to once or twice a year get an album from [...]Archive

Richard Thompson: Electric
Richard Thompson Electric Southbound I can’t lie – much as I was excited about the idea of a new Richard Thompson album, I was a little bit scared with all this early talk of “folk-funk” and such. Electric, Thompson’s latest, features a tight trio tearing through typical Thompson fare. And though that folk-funk description is [...]Archive

Moon Duo: Circles
Moon Duo Circles Sacred Bones Moon Duo is a side project for Wooden Shjips’ Ripley Johnson (guitar/vocals) and his keyboardist partner Sanae Yamada. Like Shjips they do the hypnotic-groove thing attached to fuzzy-pop/stoner-rock. It’s less jam-band, more Krautrock-influenced but certainly Moon Duo’s music should appeal to fans of Wooden Shjips. But – particularly on this, [...]Archive

The Chieftains: Live Over Ireland – Water From The Well
The Chieftains Live Over Ireland: Water From The Well Shock The Water From The Well CD was a return-to-roots project for The Chieftains and the DVD of the same name shows performances, rehearsals and recording footage from the album and tour as well as generous interviews with band members tracing the history of the group [...]Archive

This Must Be The Place: Film
This Must Be The Place Director: Paolo Sorrentino Trinity Film I found it best, 10 minutes in, to think of Sean Penn’s character Cheyenne as not just Robert Smith of The Cure, but Robert Smith of The Cure post-stroke. And maybe that’s why they couldn’t go there completely with this as any sort of official [...]Archive

The Vinyl Countdown # 1413
Gene Krupa, Drummer Man (1956) I was pleased to find this. Just the other weekend; it’s billed as Gene Krupa but also features Anita O’Day and Roy Eldridge – I had a couple of CDs of the Anita/Gene pairing (and some Roy too). I’m a fan of all three – but it’s O’Day in particular [...]Archive

Sound It Out: The Very Last Record Shop In Teesside, UK
Sound It Out The Very Last Record Shop In Teesside, UK Dogwoof Where The Last Shop Standing failed (click here to see my review), Sound It Out is a triumph, because it’s one thing to parade around celebrities – people who can always afford music and, therefore, are always given it for free – but [...]Archive

The Vinyl Countdown # 1414
Michael Jackson, Off The Wall (1979) Probably it wasn’t until the run of CD reissues in the early 2000s when I really got into this album. My brother was a big fan and he had a shitty CD copy – and I liked it, knew it, grew up with it too – radio-wise; I was [...]Archive

The Ruby Suns: Christopher
The Ruby Suns Christopher Lil’ Chief I’d never ever been a fan of Ryan McPhun and The Ruby Suns, or The Ruby Suns, as McPhun seemed to disappear inside the band name. Previous recordings have left me cold. And I really wasn’t a fan of the last album. But I like Christopher, yet another rebirth [...]Archive
